Inaugurating the session at 09:30 hours on 06 Feb 2012, Mr. Satya Kumar, Deputy Chairman of VPT said that the marine sector in India is in for a phenomenal growth in the coming decades. In particular, he emphasized that the port sector, whose current capacity is about one billion ton (built over 150 years), will see an added capacity of another one billion ton in the next ten years. The challenge according to him, which is widely shared across all ports in the country, is about the quality of data related to sea bed, and dredging depths. In this context, he said the Multibeam Sonar technology is the next leap forward and therefore, reiterated the significance of such a course at this juncture.

The five-day training program was led by bathymetric experts, Mike Brissette and Véronique Jégat who came all the way from Canada. The program was primarily intended for Single-Beam echo sounder surveyors, as also, the fresh entrants into hydrographic survey arena. Mike reiterated that the main benefits of the Multibeam Technology are 100% of sea bed coverage and associated cost and time benefits to improve the quality of acquired data.

The training program covered both the classroom sessions and sea sorties for practice hydrographic survey. The course covered theoretical and software aspects of Multibeam technology and GPS; as well as, practice in data acquisition, sonar positioning, water column measurement, calibration of equipment, patch test, data processing and visualization.
